Integrated Humanitarian Aid (IHA) has successfully reunited two unaccompanied and separated children with their families in Abyei, marking another important achievement in the organization’s ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable children affected by displacement and humanitarian crises.
The reunification was completed through IHA’s Family Tracing and Reunification (FTR) programme, a core child protection intervention that helps children who have become separated from their families safely return to the care of their parents or primary caregivers.
The two children were identified among the internally displaced persons (IDP) population in Abyei during routine child protection case management activities. After their identification, IHA immediately placed them in safe alternative care arrangements to ensure their protection while trained child protection staff initiated family tracing efforts.
Working closely with community leaders, local child protection structures, and humanitarian partners, IHA conducted comprehensive tracing activities to locate the children’s families and verify suitable caregivers. Once the tracing process was successfully completed and the children’s best interests were confirmed, both children were safely reunited with their families.
The reunification restored vital family bonds and provided the children with the opportunity to grow up in a safe, nurturing, and protective family environment. Returning children to the care of their families not only strengthens their emotional well-being but also reduces their exposure to risks such as neglect, abuse, exploitation, and other protection concerns that often affect children living in displacement settings.
For children who have experienced separation due to conflict, displacement, or other emergencies, family reunification is an important step towards recovery. As of May 2026, a total of 39 unaccompanied and separated children—18 boys and 21 girls—have been successfully reunified with their families across Abyei and the Ruweng Administrative Area. Most of these children were separated from their caregivers as a result of conflict and displacement, underscoring the continued need for comprehensive child protection services in humanitarian settings.
